STAFF, VOLUNTEERS & VISITORS

11 staff workers care for the children and manage the Home.

6 nursery nurses staff the 6 nursery rooms. A nursery nurse stays at the home and sleeps with the children. She does not go home after work, but stays at the Babies’ Home, and has one day off a week. All of our workers are very dedicated.

We are thankful for the many volunteers we have. They come to work on the facility— to paint, to repair, to build for us. They also come to help feed the children, and often bring treats for them.

Volunteers come and play with the babies in the morning. In warm weather they often play in the swimming pool. The little ones also have an outdoor playground which they enjoy.

Many of our volunteers are U.S. service personnel.

In the summer there are many visitors from the U.S. and Europe. This is the time that many of the children are adopted.

American children and their parents come to see our orphanage and the children. Often they are Korean children who were adopted from our orphanage by Americans. The children want to see the orphanage where they have grown.

A typical day at the Sung Ae Won Babies’ Home

Usually by the time the children reach school age they are adopted by a family. If they have not been adopted by that time, they are sent to another orphanage to live and attend school (from age 8 to 18). Our orphanage is the only one in Busan city which is for little babies.

The children go to nursery school, which is about 10 minutes’ drive away by minibus. They wear uniforms, which we buy each year, and also pay for their tuition. We also buy some stationery for their nursery school.

The children leave for school at about 9:40 a.m. and return to the Home at about 4:00 p.m.

There is also a fenced area with domestic animals—chickens, ducks, pigs and rabbits. A small lake was constructed in 1999 for goldfish. The children enjoy all these animals.

Babies in their cribs
There are 6 nursery rooms equipped with cribs for the babies.

Children at the playground Babies playing together inside
The children love to play outside on the playground and inside as well.
